Mikael Carlsson
Mikael Carlsson was born in Stockholm Sweden, into a musical family.
His father Ingemar was an alto and french horn player. Mikael started his musical life aged 4, with cornet lessons from his father. When he was ten, Mikael took up the trombone and euphonium. He was a pupil at the Södra Latin Music High School 1979-1981, and then studied at The Royal College of Music In Stockholm with professor Sven-Erik Eriksson.
In 1986 Mikael was appointed principal trombone and euphonium of The Stockholm Wind Symphony Orchestra. This orchestra was jointly funded by the City of Stockholm and the Swedish armed forces. When working for the military, the orchestra was known as The Band of The Swedish Royal Airforce. In 1993 Mikael was appointed bass trombonist of The Royal Stockholm Opera.
Mikael has always enjoyed brass bands, he was principal euphonium with Solna Brass from 1983 to 1992, and has held the same position with Stockholm Brass Band (Swedish National Champions 2008) since 2007.
Mikael has made many solo appearances both at home and abroad, several of which, once in the USA and once in Switzerland, have been televised. He is currently collaborating with Christian Lindberg on a concerto for euphonium and wind band, symphony orchestra or brassband.
Mikael Carlsson is privileged to have a new solo piece written specially for him by composer and musician Mats Nilsson. The piece is thirty minutes long and the soloist has to play three instruments:
tenor trombone, euphonium and bass trombone. The first version will be for soloist and symphonic wind orchestra accompaniment, this version will be premiered in the autumn of 2009 on Gotland, the Baltic island and home of the ensemble Gotlands Musiken. The second version will be for symphony orchestra. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra are planning to perform the piece in their 2010 season, and other Scandinavian orchestras are also interested in performin
